With four trains an hour from LHR and a travel time of 15 minutes, plus about 20 - 25min on the Circle line, travel time is actually longer for HEX plus Underground. From T3 Arrivals head down to the subway walkway to the Underground station that serves T1,2,3. Take any Piccadilly line train towards Cockfosters. Alight at Hammersmith and walk across the platform literally, takes about ten seconds to an eastbound District line train.

Take the District line train to South Kensington and alight there. Although the Piccadilly line calls at South Ken station, the walk from the platform to the ticket hall and way out is lengthy, involving stairs, two escalators and long hikes of about 25m each.

District line platform to the ticket hall involves two sets of stairs up, each set about a dozen steps, then a short walk to the ticket hall. I think it's an easier schlep, to be honest. There are also a few stairs up from the ticket hall to street level. How long do you plan to stay in the capital? On arrival simply follow the signs to the tube station and board a Piccadilly line train. At Hammersmith there is an easy cross platform change to the District line which will take you to South Kensington or Sloane Square.

Transport for London would like more people to use Oyster, as the plastic card is reuseable and handier than paper tickets, so Oyster single fares are cheaper than cash single fares. Oyster fares also cap at a daily rate. That rate is the equivalent of a one day Travelcard for the zones in which you travel plus time of day considerations peak or off peak.
