Which frosting tips to use




















Buy rounds that are 1 to 2 inches larger than your cake. For frosting cakes, look for the larger inch bags. A few icing tips will let you add some decoration to your cake without much effort.

I recommend star tips, plain tips, and a leaf tip. Star tips can make flowers a Wilton 1M is a must and starbursts. Plain tips are great for writing, and leaf tips are good for making, you guessed it, leaves. Another great tip to have is a large cake icer tip. It makes icing the sides of a cake a breeze. Russian icing tips are made to produce an intricate flower shape in one fell swoop. This is one tip I never skip.

Strips of waxed paper placed under the edge of the cake help with a clean edge. Once your cake is frosted, pull out the strips, and you have a clean edge. Pull the strips out before piping a decorative border. A good rule of thumb is that the frosting should cling to a silicone spatula and not slide off unless the handle is tapped on the side of the bowl. A crumb coat is a light coating of frosting that smooths the cake and seals in crumbs.

If making a layer cake, a crumb coat also helps to fill in the gaps between layers. It could be jaggedy on one or both sides, and practising how to use this piping tip is not too challenging. Just try making them evenly spaced, and you can turn anything into beautiful baskets! Besides grass, you can use a grass-shaped piping tip to make wreaths and pine trees, perfect for the Christmas season! Simply pipe, stop squeezing, pull away, and repeat. To give it a more natural look, pipe the grass shape slightly to the sides instead of straight up.

The one on the left, the Wilton , has a large V notch, which creates a smooth leaf that is full at the base and tapered towards the end. The tip on the right with the smaller opening, the Wilton 67, has a cut along the top and sides with a tiny notch in its middle.

This helps make a more ruffled leaf. Piping tips that help you create pretty leaves are handy for adding quick detail to floral cakes and cookies. The trick is to practice holding your leaf tip at different angles to find out what works for you. For the grass effect on the left, we used the Ateco tip.
