Hi there! This article could not be written any better! Looking through this post reminds me of my previous roommate! He always kept preaching about this.

I appreciate you for sharing! Unfortunately I could not buy the Daily News paper on the day my feature on Adventure Tourism appeared. But I read it on line. Today 22 August I found your message. Almost every Wednesday one of my features appears in the Daily News.

At the moment I write on Greek Epics. Thanks, Kaviratne. I read your article when I was planning to write a feature on Adventure Tourism relevant to Sri Lanka. I found important points for my information. Hope to hear from you. An impressive share! I have just forwarded this onto a colleague who had been conducting a little research on this. And he actually ordered me dinner simply because I found it for him… lol.

So let me reword this…. Thanks for the meal!! But yeah, thanks for spending the time to talk about this issue here on your website. I think the other side of the coin is that without eco-travel, many of the national parks and preserves around the world would not be possible.

Is it even possible for the ordinary person with a family to live a life where they spend their life traveling the world learning without being ridiculously wealthy?

Is it possible? Great article, Candice, as usual. I would add another reason you alluded to — in who-knows-how-many-years from now, it might be gone. I went to Timbuktu about 8 years ago, just before it was put on the State Dept. And I think of your trip to Churchill, Canada to see the polar bears. When will that natural treasure be lost to us and to the world? We Americans are way too insular.

We must encourage our children and grandchildren to be passionate about travel! Thanks for letting me vent. I work in the travel adventure industry, specializing in Costa Rica. Dear Candice, I love traveling. When we travel,we leave all our worries aside and looking for a different experience. All the reasons given by you are very appropriate.

My father outlived his dad by three decades and his mom by a decade. Being fit helps, but I believe that the stimulation of nature, the sense of accomplishment that you get with adventure travel, exponentially enhances our retirement years far more than any gym or golf course could. Adventure Travel defies you from becoming old. All I know is that the retired folks that I know that are doing Adventure Travel seem to have a greater joy of life and a greater quality of life. Adventure Travel helps to keep your brain and your memory sharp.

Being in nature helps reduce stress, a major cause of illnesses. The activity and constant challenge of using your muscles, balance and stamina in different terrain and situations keeps your body and brain in its best possible shape.

I used to be a slug, but as my 50th birthday was closing in, that milestone made me want to pause and ask myself what kind of life did I want for the back half. That slowed down life that I see most folks do or the incredible retirement of my parents? I found online a twelve weeks from couch potato to triathlete. They had a training schedule that I followed to a tee. In the beginning, I had to walk the distance of two light posts along my neighborhood streets for every one post I was able to run.

Eventually, my body was able to run continuously. I had similar struggles with biking and definitely with swimming because I still stink at swimming. I was able to do my competition without embarrassing myself and that was my goal. Two years later, I decided I wanted to learn how to backpack and took baby steps once again to get my back and my feet used to carrying weight. Just take that first baby step and believe in yourself. It will change your life in all the most positive ways if you get this ball rolling, I promise.

I swear the people I know who do adventure travel exude far more zest and vitality than those that stay in shape in traditional ways. Adventure Travel challenges you in so many more ways than just challenging your body. What ballroom-dancing did for Sandra, tennis did for my mom and dad, it became the catalyst and springboard for their outdoor adventures.

When mom was 72, she had a stroke and soon gave up tennis. They channeled their energies into activities that she could do and started focusing more on the outdoor adventures like canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and cycling. They trade in their tennis rackets for hiking boots, bike helmets and paddles and headed into the woods. I love a story my mom tells. It was funny when we were driving down the highway.

We had two bikes on the back of the car and the canoe and the kayak on the top. We thought we were some young people taking a nice vacation.

They drive past us and they looked at us and laugh because we have some nice equipment for the trip. After her stroke when mom was no longer able to play tennis, she switched her gears and started doing more outdoor adventures such as hiking, paddling and cycling. I took two other things. I could canoe and kayak. I just love how they modified their activities based on what their bodies were able to do so that they were able to keep doing things for decades longer than most people would even attempt to do such things.

I asked mom if she had any thoughts. Life has been good. I remember the best times of my life were outdoors. I suggest anybody that wants to live in a long and happy life, pick up Adventure Travel. If you want a rocket like mom, take her advice and take on Adventure Travel. You will not regret it.

On my Nicaragua trip last winter, I found further inspiration. There were three men in their 70s, and eight of us were older than This is a small group, maybe a dozen. I thought my parents were just flukes, but these folks gave me inspiration.

Use the group to ask questions, post photos of your adventures and help fellow ATA members. To get the conversation started, how about posting your favorite travel photo and why you picked it? Regardless your post will let people know a little bit about yourself. I want to challenge each of you, no matter what your adventure travel level is, is to do a plus one outside of your comfort level.
