Prom can come with a variety of pressures -- and whether it's sex, alcohol or borderline illegal pranks, it's all high-risk. You never want to get in trouble for being a part of someone else's bad idea, and going to prom, especially with a date you may not know well, only increases the chances of getting caught in a bad situation.
Even if you're not romantically involved with your date, the buildup to prom can make it feel like just as much work. The logistical compromises alone are cause for conflict and disappointment.
By going stag, you don't have to put in the work of a real relationship without the reward. You can enjoy the dance for what it is: just a dance. There's nothing that makes you feel happier about being single than watching a couple fight publicly.
